The STiR team learns about local innovations from teachers in a school in Delhi, India

Background

STiR aims to motivate teachers to change their mindsets and their classroom practices to improve student learning.

Over the last decade, substantial progress has been made across India and other middle- and low-income countries in improving access to primary and secondary education. Yet such improvements in access and resources have not been matched with an equivalent increase in education quality and outcomes. In India, more than half of 5th-grade children are at least 3 grades behind where they should be for reading, and more than half cannot do 2-digit subtraction (see reports from the ASER Centre for more information).

STiR operates on the premise that teachers represent the solution, not the problem, in helping students achieve learning outcomes. They focus on ways to motivate teachers as the key channel through which classroom practices and culture will change in ways that improve student learning. To do this, teachers need to gain motivation, to adjust their mindset towards thinking they can and should innovate in their classrooms and to gain confidence in adapting classroom practice.

Over the first year of a three-year Teacher Changemaker Journey, teachers engage, in particular, in selecting and implementing teacher-led ‘micro-innovations’ to gain confidence and comfort in changing classroom practice. STiR collates the best ‘micro-innovations’ in education taking place in classrooms and staff rooms locally and globally to inspire teachers, reflecting the belief that the most effective method of change is to build on what the best teachers and schools are already doing.

IDinsight service

STiR Education has engaged IDinsight for a variety of M&E services. These have included designing a performance metrics scorecard to track progress, elaborating a theory of change, and a series of process evaluations in both India and Uganda.

With these measures in place, IDinsight has now partnered with STiR for two large-scale, stratified cluster-randomized evaluations in India, with a goal of improving programmatic learning about how to change classroom practice and improve student learning.
